PDF downloading problem

A growing number of readers have been experiencing difficulty in downloading the full-text files, but it seems to be an intermittent problem. The recent increase in reports of the problem may simply be a result of increasing use of the site, but it could suggest a measure of incompatibility in the latest combinations of operating system - browser - Acrobat. Our sincere thanks to Ingenta, Tatiana Feldman (AusIMM web master) and Dr Gawen Jenkin (convenor of the January 2003 MDGS meeting at the University of Leicester) for the following helpful suggestions.

    Tatiana Feldman:

I too am sometimes getting this message 'Object Label Badly Formatted' when downloading files from the IMMediateTransactions web site. I found a way to avoid this problem by saving the file to my hard disk first and then opening on my local computer. I found some information on the web on this issue which might be useful to you:

    Found at http://www.yorku.ca/finweb/Purchasing/faq_acrobat.htm

Error Message - "Object Label Badly Formatted" This error message may appear when you attempt to open a PDF file/form when using Acrobat Reader version 5. The file/form will not open after this message appears. There are two options to solve this problem:

    * (1) Uncheck the "Allow Fast Web View" option: Prefs > General > Options > Allow Fast Web View. This should make the error go away, although viewing of the PDF will be slower.

    * (2) Uninstall Acrobat Reader 5, and install Acrobat Reader 4. Version 4 is available for download at

  • Try earlier version of Acrobat

Issue: Trying to view a PDF in a browser results in the error "Object Label Badly Formatted".

Solution: If you get this error using different browsers and/or different operating systems, it is likely to be caused by the web server trying to serve the PDF. This error occurs when an object in the PDF is incomplete or missing some key element. In this case, it could be caused by the web server not downloading enough of the object to make it usable. This is usually caused by incorrect byte serving of the PDF. If you turn off byte range requests in Acrobat (Prefs->General,Options->Allow Fast Web View) it should make the error go away, although viewing of the PDF will be slower.

    Dr. Gawen R. T. Jenkin:

Simon, Just tried the updated web page - exactly the same problem when going from the link on the IMM pages, but worked OK when I went direct to

    http://www.transedit.co.uk/sectbx.pdf

[The files held on this site are named with the abbreviated section title followed by a letter denoting their sequence in the current issue, i.e. the third contribution in the Section A issue is sectac.pdf, the second contribution in the Section B issue is sectbb.pdf, etc. In this particular case, however, an 'x' was used as reminder, for internal purposes, that the MDSG abstracts file was intended for open access.]
